NINETEEN

GREG

I wonder if Fern noticed a big difference in me when we slept together before turning out the lights and settling down for the night. If she did, she probably put it down to me just being more attentive and engaged now that we have both said the ‘L’ word to each other. She’ll have no idea that the real reason I was far more enthusiastic with her was because I was so exhilarated after she had just given me the evidence I needed.

I feel so happy to have finally got her confession and, now I have it, I can get justice for two people I care about: Drew and Alice. The truth can come out about what happened to my late friend in his final moments and that is all anybody deserves when they lose their life in such an awful way. On top of that, I hope Alice’s conviction can be overturned now, and the police can finally start looking in the direction of the person who is really responsible.

The time when I find out if I successfully managed to get the recording of Fern admitting she knew about Drew’s affair before his death and saw to it that all involved got what she felt they deserved.

I’m full of anticipation when I tap the screen and see that the seconds are still counting, indicating that the recording is still underway, not that I need to record anything more. Fingers crossed I have all I need, so I hit the pause button before going back to the beginning and, after making sure the volume is just loud enough for me to hear it, I press play.

I hear nothing for a few seconds and almost start panicking that something hasn’t worked as it should have.

But then I hear Fern’s voice.

She’s talking about what a good time she had this evening and then I hear myself say how nice it was to meet her parents, and I relax because now it’s clear the phone was in range to easily pick up both of our voices. Knowing
